Choose a dry, ventilated position
A purpose-built log store is ideal because it combines a roof with open or slatted sides. Position it where air can circulate and avoid an enclosed, damp corner.
Keep firewood off the ground
Raise logs on a solid base, pallet or battens so they do not absorb moisture from the ground. This also allows air to reach the bottom of the stack.
Cover the top, not every side
Protect the stack from direct rain with a roof or secure top cover. Do not tightly wrap the whole stack in an impermeable sheet because trapped moisture and poor airflow can work against you.
Stack for airflow and stability
Build a stable stack with small gaps between logs. Cross-stack the ends where practical and keep the stack safe around children or pets.
Bring in only what you need
A small indoor basket is useful for the next fire, but large quantities are normally better stored outside in a suitable log store. Rotate stock so older logs are used first.
